Second Year for the Marriott Externship! Way to go Wildcats!

April 10, 2014

On Thursday April 10th current 10th and 11th graders interested in being part of the Practicum of Hospitality Services that intern at the Woodlands Waterway Marriott toured the property. They toured different departments on property. Mr. Fredrick Dominick, the general manager, spoke to them. They also were able to speak with Chef Daniels and other department managers. These students were attentive and asked many good questions. They represented Andy Dekaney well. The practicum class is designed for students interested in the industry and building their resume These are prospective students if they choose they need to continue the application process.

TRI-CLUB and DECA....WELL DONE!

On Saturday, April 12 the Andy Dekaney DECA members could be found serving lunch to guests at the 63rd. Annual Spring Livestock Show and Fair. The DECA organization consists of students that study marketing, hospitality and entrepreneurship. This group includes the Marriott hotel interns who were invited by Cynthia Williams, Director of CTE to help with the serving line. This event was exciting for the students since for many it was their first time on a serving line.

They were able to put into practice many of the skills taught to them in their different classes. ShaQuinya McQueen, DECA president was responsible for communicating with the members about the event and ensuring that enough members would be in attendance. Gracey Tax, 1st Vice President of DECA and a Marriott hotel intern, was surprised to see one of the hotel employees at the event on Saturday. Just another reminder of how networking can help the students advance in their lives!

The DECA members were honored to serve Dr. Johnson, Area Superintendent and honorary DECA member. Dr. Johnson has attended several DECA meetings.  Kandra Gunter and Eloise Reigrut are the DECA sponsors and Marketing teachers at Dekaney. Ms. Reigrut is also the Practicum of Hospitality teacher who oversees the Woodlands Waterways Marriott internship program. Both Ms. Gunter and Mrs. Reigrut were very proud of how the students organized and coordinated this activity mostly by themselves.

The students took their responsibilities head-on and truly “Made It Count”! Helping on Saturday were:

Luis Alvarado -DECA Public Relations and Webmaster

This year DECA’s National motto was “Make It Count.” Needless to say, Richardson Dutervil, 11th grader and Vice-President of DECA, was living the motto!

He was invited to participate on the Spring I.S.D. selection committee to discuss the qualifications of the school district's future superintendent of schools.  DECA sponsors Eloise Reigrut and Kandra Gunter were approached by a Spring ISD board member and DECA Alumni, Chris Bell, to submit a name of a current DECA member that would be willing to attend the meeting. Richardson Dutervil stepped up and “made it count”!

This was a wonderful experience for Richardson, who represented Dekaney High School well and has truly demonstrated what DECA represents. Earlier this spring, Richardson competed at the State DECA conference. He is also a member of our principal, Dr. Delic Loyde’s, Ambassador group. These students are called upon for various activities to represent our school. When not in class, competing or spreading good will, you can find Mr. Dutervil on the track field.
